AXA ART Participates with The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, 9/11 Memorial and Museum and 9/11 Family Members in Re-dedication to commemorate. The Fritz Koenig’s Sphere Return to a permanent home in Liberty Park.
In late August 2017 The Sphere, the monumental 27-foot sculpture by Fritz Koenig that withstood the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center, was moved from it’s temporary location in Battery Park to a permanent home, a newly created memorial park located just south of the World Trade Center . This was not an easy undertaking as the colossal and revered sculpture weighs 25-tons.
Created by German artist Fritz Koenig, the work was commissioned by Port Authority for the World Trade Center’s as a symbol of peace. The iconic sculpture became a memorable feature of lower Manhattan over the years. It was both a landmark and meeting point for New Yorkers and visitors alike.
Koenig’s sculpture was the only artwork that emerged from the rubble after the 9/11 attacks, badly damaged but structurally intact. Because of this, The Sphere came to symbolize the tenacious spirit of all of us affected by that day – bruised and beaten but not broken by this tragedy.
The Sphere became the property of AXA ART once the insurance claim was paid. AXA ART in turn gifted the work back to the World Trade Center and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to serve as a symbol of perseverance for the city of New York and all those who were affected by the tragedy.
In commenting on the gift, Christiane Fischer, President and CEO of AXA ART Americas Corporation said, “AXA ART is resolute in its belief that the Fritz Koenig Sculpture should serve as a symbol of hope and resilience for the people of New York City and a dedication to those who perished as a result of the tragic occurrences on 9/11”.
On November 29, 2017, AXA ART joined the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, 9/11 Memorial and Museum and 9/11 Family Members in a re-dedication ceremony to commemorate the artwork’s return to its permanent home. “
“I hope all who visit The Sphere find its permanent home a place of quiet reflection and inspiration“.
